CHECK LIST

1. Check whether you are at risk from flooding by viewing a flood risk map for your area. You can also view the Environment Agency website by entering your postcode on the relevant page.

2. Register on the Environment Agency Flood Hotline website to receive early warning calls for upcoming flooding events. Please call 0345 9881188.

3. Make sure your property is in good condition to prevent flooding from causing unnecessary damage to your property. It is recommended that any property at risk of flooding should have flood protection measures such as sluice gates, air brick sealing etc. SAFAG is also able to provide advice and guidance.

4. To avoid flood damage to your car, consider moving it to higher ground.

5. Prepare an emergency “tote” bag filled with essentials.

6. Have sandbags and sand or other methods ready to stop water from entering your home. In Shipston, sandbags are available from the town council. For Tredington and Newbold, the parish council has a stock of unfilled sandbags on hand at Blackwell Business Park which residents can use for free, but they must provide their own sand and fill the bags. Protect doorways, low-level vents, windows, etc. with sandbags or dirt-filled garbage bags or similar types of protection.

7. If it is safe to do so, move as many items and furniture upstairs as possible, or at least to higher ground.

8. Make sure you have plenty of clean bottled water.

9. If you have any neighbors who are frail, please help them stay safe their property. Regularly check that they are safe in an emergency.

10. If severe flooding is imminent, turn off gas, water and power.

11. Dealing with your insurance company will be easier if you make sure receipts and other documentation are available, especially for higher-cost items.

12. Avoid driving if possible, especially in flood waters. Avoid walking in flood water.

13. Assume all flood water is contaminated with sewage.

14. Do not let children play in the water, keep as dry as possible.

15. Do not use food that has come into contact with flood water.

16. Do not drink mains water until assured that the water is clear of contaminants.

17. Do not turn on electricity until it has been checked by a qualifed electrician.
