2021 EA Flood Award - WINNER

TESTIMONIALS

We are honoured to have received the following testimonials to our work:

Dear Mr Scobie, I am my neighbour shared observations of the recent flood. We agreed that it had been different from many earlier floods. The rise and the fall had been slower, the flow in the river bed less fast. It had not developed a speedy flow across our grounds. This may have been a question of a particular rainfall, but we supposed that flood abatement exercises  had played a part. We are grateful. Sincerely.

Guy Harris – Local Resident letter to Shipston Mayor

Hi Phil, Once again I find myself amazed at the success of the measures you undertook on Pig Brook. I wouldn’t have believed it possible to see my paddock not flooded after all this recent rain. Many thanks

Ian Hunt – Landowner

Really good to see the Shipston Natural Flood Management interventions in action following the recent rain. The data gathered from their monitoring will further inform the role that #NFM can play in flood risk reduction.

Ian Jones – EA Flood and Coastal Risk Manager

I am extremely proud of our town – not only for the courageous way residents and businesses coped with the devastating floods in 2007, but for the way in which volunteers have sought ways to minimise flood risk in the future. I would particularly like to congratulate SAFAG on their achievements to date.

Dan Scobie – Shipston Town Mayor

We read many inspiring stories during the judging process, which meant that narrowing it down to six entrants (one of which was SAFAG) was a difficult task. However, we believe that those who have made it onto the shortlist represent some of the very best examples of how people respond to the impacts of flooding.

Andy Bord – Chief Executive of Flood Re

SAFAG have developed and instigated a programme of over 300 NFM measures in a very short timescale and I commend and support their request for further funding in 2019 to complete the job right around the Warwickshire Stour Catchment to help protect its communities from flooding in future. I was delighted to meet with the Shipston Flood Action Group on 27th October to be updated on the work they are doing to protect rural communities from flooding in the south of my constituency.

Nadhim Zahawi – MP Stratford Upon Avon Constituency

This is just the sort of initiative that should be encouraged by Government as it is “bottom up”, involving volunteers and experts in land drainage in collaboration with farmers and landowners to the benefit of towns and villages at risk of flooding.

Hon. Philip Smith – Campden House Estate

(Tweet) : Visiting the great natural flood management work of Shipston-on-Stour flood action group. Not much flooding today but good preparation for when it does (June 2018)

Alison Baptiste – EA Director Strategy and Investment

It was fantastic to see an exemplar of community project.working together to deliver a local project….you guys have executed the project in a very professional manner which takes community collaboration to a different level.

Shirel Steadman – Regional Flood & Coastal Committee Chair

Thanks for another great visit – the passion and knowledge of the group and the work you do is to be much admired, with 270 natural flood interventions already put in place. The real beauty of SAFAG’s work is it improves resilience whilst blending into the landscape.

John Curtin – EA Executive Director FCRM

A very good and educating day and I am greatly impressed with what you are doing. I very much hope that one way or another you can get phase 2 funded with all the subsequent benefits for Shipston.

Richard Mcdonald – EA Deputy Chairman
